Internet Explorer Icon in the address bar

I've noticed recently a lot of sites have changed the look of their URL in the address bar of the web browser.

Usually you see an IE icon followed by the URL. However on some sites, they have customised this icon to reflect their companies logo.

Has anyone any ideas on how this is achieved and can you explain it? Is it just a gimmick or a way of identifying the uniqueness of a site?
