I am running WinXP Home edn. The problem is that when I disconnect from the Internet and a while afterwards redial to go back on - my IE and OE programs do not recognise that there is a connection. I then have to restart my computer to put things right.

Has anyone heard of this problem as I am at a loss of how to fix it.

do they come up in off line mode if they do just say work online under file menu

No, not that simple I'm afraid ^wave^.
IE opens with 'page not found' refresh does nothing. OE opens with 'problem with server' or like.

Hope it's not this but the recent virus worm causes similar problems particularly to XP. Lots of threads about it on this page.

Check in your programmes list to see if you've got the patch No.823980.

Otherwise the net has been very busy today because I haven't been able to connect all afternoon.

Thank you Watchful but this problem has been with me since my computer was new so I doubt if it is a virus. I have got patch No. 823980 thanks.

When the problem is present, can you still log on to the net via Start - Settings - Network connections - and click the connection you are using - does the connect box come up and get you connected?

Sorry DieSse - I didn't make it too plain - I can log on without any problem at all, it is while I am logged on that my IE and OE don't recognise the fact that I am logged on. That means that I cannot get any emails or look at any web pages. To rectify this I have to do a reboot then all is well again.

I know, it sounds crazy but thats how it is.

I can't see this problem clearing on its own but yesterday I downloaded and installed some Windows Updates and today the Internet is working just as it should. I have been on and off the Internet several times over an 8 hour period and it works OK.

The updates I installed were;

823559, 829390, 821557, 330994, 811630, Q329048, Q323255, 814078, 817606, 819696, 823980,814033 and Q817287.
