Internet Connection Problem - Please Help!

  smirnoffkopite 13:03 24 Nov 03

I'm having problems conencting to the internet.

I am working on Windows 98.

My computer connects to the internet, and shows the dial up speed.

When Internet Explorer opens, it says page cannot be displayed.

I have tried numerous web pages, and several different dial up connections, but none work.

I have checked my IP and DNS, and sent 4 packets to test it. It sent 4, and received 0.

Can anyone offer any advice?

If you are not getting your home page, go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections and enable Always Dial My Default Connection, which will be your ISP's website (should be listed above in the panel).

Also check under the General tab that your ISP is, in fact, listed as your home page in the first field.

If not type in the ISP's URL and then click on the Use Default default button.

Do you use a firewall? It sounds as if a firewall is blocking your connection or that your security settings are too high in IE.

Thanks. It seems there was a firewall I was not aware of, so I've taken it off, and its working fine.

Thanks for your help.

But you need a firewall..:-)

You should check the settings and also IE Security settings. Here's the Microsoft rundown on Security Settings, although the defaults should be fine. Also allow First Party, block Third Party and don't allow Session Cookies.
