Internet connection problem

As I am having problems with my main PC, I am using an old one to go online. I had previously formatted it 50/50 with Win98 and Mandrake 9.2 and when I first used it I used 98 and Internet Explorer- it connects for a few seconds, the homepage loads then I get the 'This program has performed an illegal operation and will close' box every time I try. Yet if I use the Linux via Firefox it connects fine and stays connected.

With regard the linux, when I am about to send information I get a box telling me it will be sent uncrypted, how do I change the setting so it is encrypted.?

So can anyone tell me why my windows connection keeps disconnecting please?

Or how to set encryption in mandrake?

Sounds like you've got some corruption with your install of IE. Have you tried Firefox in Windows?

That's a good point Kate, I'll try that. Wish I could think logically!.
