Internet connection via mobile too slow

If I use IrDA or Bluetooth to connect my laptop to the internet through my mobile phone I can only get a connection speed of 9.6kbps. I'm connecting by BT Yahoo! Any ideas how I can improve the speed without paying a fortune?

Thanks Dipso, have read up on Onspeed and it says it's good for surfing but not for file download. As I want to download and send email and download files from info sources it would appear that it won't help me a lot. Good try though. Any other thoughts?

I have now discovered that the connection through a mobile actually acts as a WAP and t-mobile system cannot work any faster than 9.6kbps. So I can't get a faster connection speed using a t-mobile connection. Thanks anyway.
