Internet connection keeps pausing

My broadband connection has started to pause, sometimes for a couple of seconds, sometimes up to 30 seconds, before resuming as normal.

This is annoying and makes it impossible to download large files. General surfing seems ok most of the time, but anything more than that is just frustrating.

I've checked the broadband connection on a laptop connected to the same router, and I've checked and changed the CAT5 cable, so the problem has to lie within either the hardware of software of the PC. It's Vista, and has been running fine up until now.

I'm powering a laptop and a Netgear Skype phone off the same wireless router as the PC so I know the router is OK.

Anyone any ideas where I should start? I've removed Skype to see if it was a problem with that but it hasn't helped.

Drilled the problem down to a faulty network card - replaced it with a USB wireless adapater and all is well again.
