Sorry again but while i'm on i might as well air all my problems.
On start up and when i open certain programs the connect to the internet box keeps appearing. This has happened since some dodgy site threw a load of porn at me and installed icons and added a program.I have removed the program and icons but cant seem to stop something that tries to dial out all the time.I'm thinking that maybe it messed around with my settings.
Thanks to anyone who helps me.

Which progs do you run when the connect to internet box appears?

one more thing...what OS are you using?

win 98 se.
it pops up on startup and i've just noticed it pops up after i've disconnected!!

Win 98 is easy to sort out so dont worry!

I would guess there is either a programme in your start up folder or a command in your win.ini file...possibly and/or your system.ini file (i think this is the right file name, but it has been so long since i have done anything with Win98 that I might be wrong) which is making your system request a connection to the internet.

If the above was the case then this would explain why your PC would want to connect to the web on start up. As for wanting to do it when you disconnect I really dont know (sorry).

A word of warning though...dont edit your win.ini or system.ini files without backing them up first! You can edit them using notepad I think.

Please understand this is just my advice and it is probably best to wait for someone a bit more knowledgable to post a response before editing your important system files!

Nevertheless, I would advise backing up all your important personal files right now...just in case there is something a bit more unpleasant happening.

If you back up your important files....at worst you will only have to re-install windows and put your stuff back on. But at least you wont lose anything!

I'd run spybot, it should remove all traces of the dialler and also any other nasties installed by websites on your pc.

Try this. Go to control panel > internet options > connections > and put a check in where it says Never Dial A Connection. Let us know if it works.

Surely choosing never dial a connection will mean that it will...well....never dial a connection (even when you want to).

No, it won't dial a connection unless you choose to. Am I thinking wrong? Thats what I have mine set to. It never pops up when I don't want it to.
