Internet Banking - ? Mark in amount fields

Whatever site I visit that has sterling amount fields a ? precedes the amount. Never really bothered about it until today when I tried to transfer some money via my Internet Bank. When I enter the amount - 500.00 it changes to ?500.00 and I get a response of inavlid amount field. Same happens if I delete the ? and try again.
Strange one. Any ideas please?

what operating system are you using?
Have you checked your language settings in regional settings in control panel?

Sorry I should have included OS
I am set ot English (United Kingdom). Using XP. I have Norton Antivirus up to date, as are the Windows Updates.

if you go into regional settings, customize and then the currency tab, does it show the £ sign?

Just checked the 'advanced' tab in Regional and Language Options. Changed 'Language for non-Unicode programs' from English (American) to English (United Kingdom), restarted PC and all now OK.
