Intermittent problem with laptop hard drive

I own a Compaq 1750 laptop and I bought a 48GB IBM Travelstar HDD to replace the existing 6GB. All was well for a couple of months, but an intermittent fault has now developed which is driving ne round the bend. When I switch the laptop on it either boots up perfectly, or I get a "system disk error" and the machine won't boot at all. I have swapped the HDD into another 1750 and the same thing happens. Do I just put it down to experience, replace the HDD and chuck the Travelstar in the bin? or is there some sort of workaround with this problem and some way of remedying this error.

...if it's only a couple of months old, surely you can get it exchanged where you purchased it.

try running a full scan and defrag the drive

Thanks for suggestions, HDD failed completely and has now been consigned to the bin!
