Intermittent Boot problem now appears permanent!

This PC has always been a bit frail; it has an occasional tendency to crash without any (apparent) major reason such as removing a CD.
Sometimes re-booting brings up the following:
“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup
using the original Setup CD-ROM
Select "r" at the first screen to start repair”.
Usually after 2 or 3 re-tries it boots successfully and that is that.
This time it appeared to be permanently in a loop, so I inserted the XP Home Disc and booted from that.
After loading all the setup files, it came up with a blue screen with the following message:

Then followed various instructions including booting in Safe Mode, which it won’t, and the following code:
*** STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X7C80A11E, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X7C80A11E)

As a matter of interest the Parallel Port died a month ago, so I installed another.

The M’Board is an Asus P4V8X-X with a 2.8 Celeron
Radeon 7000 series Graphics
Creative Sound Blaster
730 MB Ram
& 2 X 80 Gig Hard drives (Main and Backup) each 1/3 full
It is not connected to the internet, nor does it have a phone line attached

I use it mainly for Photo & Video editing, DVD Burning, and storing Job specific Data.

Can anyone help as this problem has now exceeded all the know-how that I have!

TIA, Fish

What about a format and a reinstall

I'd like to avoid that if possible; too much to loose. Besides I feel there must be an underlying problem which is the root cause of the PCs wayward behavior.

Fruit Bat, Thank you for the identification of the problem.
However I still need either a cure or a work-round, as my machine is currently little more than a door stop!
Anybody please???
