Intermittant hard drive action

Windows XP.
Once booted my hard drive is active (the lamp comes on and the drive can be heard working) every 1-2 seconds with a pause of 3-4 seconds. This cycle is continuous.
Has anyone any ideas please

What kind of drive is it? How old is it?

Is anything taking up a large amount of the processes (ctrl alt delete and the processes tab). Is anything, when nothing else is running, taking up the computers processor?

The drive is a 60 gig maxtor about 2 years old.
With no applications running all that is shown on the processes tab is less than 1% usage

For information, I have resolved this problem. This is being caused by the Linksys wireless router. This sytem uses a monitor applet which constantly checks the wireless signal
