My sister in law is in the market for a new PC, both Compaq, one powered by the Intel Pentium D 820 Dual Core Processor, 2.8ghz, 800mhz FSB, 2 x 1mb Cache, with 512mb DDR Ram and a 256mb NVidia GeForce 6200 SE Graphics card and the other with an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ chip, again 512mb DDR Ram and an ATI Radeon X200 Express Graphics card.
The main use is for photographic work (not professional) and not particularly intensive games, the odd bit of web browsing, etc.
I understand that there is not much 64 bit software out yet but the AMD chip has received favourable reviews.
Can you compare the 2 chips directly. Is one better then the other?

Thanks for that, it was very informative. For general graphics performance the Athlon just shades it but for most of the benchmarks the Pentium takes top honours.
