Insufficient memory.

Help and advice please.
Everywhere I look on my pc tells me that I have 256mb of memory installed. I ran "Sandra"and that tells me the same but according to my pc spec. I should have 512mb.I have investigated inside the case and I have one x 512mb memory module installed in slot one on the motherboard.
Could the module be malfunctioning or have I got some settings wrong.
I have a Mesh pc with an Athlon xp 266mhz motherboard, an AMD Athlon xp 2000+ cpu (266mhz)and 512mb of pc2100 DDR memory.

Can't think of anything except a memory chip pretending to be what it is not............ A wild possibility might be a failure of a bank of half the chips on the card?

Agree with Diemmess. Looks like a wrongly labelled chip.
How long have you had the PC?

Have you just upgraded the memory ?
is it a new PC ?
or is it a fault thats just appeared ?
how much memory does the PC indicate at boot up ?
are your BIOS settings OK ?

Just some thoughts
