It is a great laptop but not for installing XP as I had a reply from Sony:

"Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your reply.

This system is not supported with a xp downgrade. We cannot guarantee that it will work.

We do not have any drivers or utilities fro xp on this system.
If it is coming up with a hardware error please do a hardware diagnostics by pressing F10 on the vaio logo during boot.

When doing downgrades that have to be done in certain ways for differant models.

We do not have any info for this system for the downgrade.

Regards,

Sony Vaio-Link Team"

So I can stick to Vista which I do not like or Windows 2000 which is a no no! can someone help me? everytime the XP cd boots up, it states it has to stop due to a hardware issue. Why would Sony want to stop us from installing XP? I have had many laptops with no problems like this before.

"Why would Sony want to stop us from installing XP?"

Because MS want you to use the bloatware that is Vista.

Bloatware!!! why the hell......they are so cruel! is it illegal?

  MAJ 20:20 16 Jan 09

Is what illegal?

For them not to allow me to install XP? seems Sony had a deal with MS but buyers suffer.

Hmm, simple answer - Don't buy Sony Computers!! Plenty of other good makes available.

I bloody will now!!!!! arrgh!!!!!!!

Thanks to you both.

No it's not illegal, MS own XP. They don't have to sell it to Sony or anyone else. You'll find it's the same with the majority of new laptops, as MS witdraw sales of XP, hardware manufacturers aren't writing and releasing XP drivers for thier new hardware.
