Help please!

Installing WinXP Home & half way into the installation the monitor goes into standby-Black screen (with the Orange standby light on montor) and pc seems to fall asleep. Keyboard & mouse movement has no effect. Reset switch restarts pc but repeats all over again.

Asus A7S333 board with a single 40GB HDD.

Is this a BIOS/CMOS setting or something hardware at fault please help.

is this an upgrade from win98?

  keith-236785 22:18 09 May 03

sorry pressed wrong button
was going to say if you are upgrading then win 98 may think the pc is being shut down
try disabling power management ( control panel, power options and select always on, set your monitor to go off after one hour. this is ample time for an install of win xp
also check you have not got your screensaver turned on, if you have turn it off. also if you have a virus checker ( especially Norton ) this would cause your pc to shut down because Norton or any other virus checker would see this as an attempted attack on your pc.
the best way really is to format your hard drive and do a clean install of xp.
BUT BEFORE YOU DO WRITE DOWN ALL YOUR COMPUTER INFORMATION ETC...... MODEM, GRAPHIC CARD, SOUND CARD, INTERNET CONNECTION SETTINGS INCLUDING DIAL UP PHONE NO LOGIN NAME AND PASSWORD
BE AWARE FORMATTING YOUR HARD DRIVE WIPES EVERYTHING......
hope this helps

Hi, We had this and it turned out to be the video driver. We got the updated one and it worked. You will maybe find that 1 or more products within the system you have is NOT compat with winxp. Try installing win 98 again and then do an upgrade. You will be presented with a window with the option to check the computer for issues relating to compatability with Win XP. When that list appears you will know what Win Xp is not happy with and be able to get the updated drivers or new components.

Hope it helps..........Newbee thebeardude

There is no O's on HDD.

Just currently:-

Please wait while Setup formats the partition
C: Partition1 (Unkonw) 39253 MB (39252 MB Free)
on 39261 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi (MBR)

Just completed as I type.

Now I will see if it happens again.

It might sound too obvious but check that you are inserting the correct product number ie 8's and B's can be confused. I believe that you can get this type of problem this way.
