i think in bios it doesn't give me the option of booting from a usb device

then no you cannot install from the USB drive

Do you hav a floppy drive?
Do you have more than one partition on the drive?

If so then copy the I386 folder to another partiton (not C:) on the HDD
Boot from floppy and run setup from the I386 folder
format the C: drive and reinstall windows (makesure you have the serial Number.

thnaks for your reply ,
i am not quite sure what you are suggesting there , even because i am not that godd with these things, still trying to learn a lot.
Anyways it has 2 partitions yes!

Now i d like to ask : if i already have windows xp on it , and would like to install it on top of it from the usb cd drive, could it not be that it will need to reboot only after the installation is completed ?
I mean i have installed windows a few times and as far as i recall the reboot doesn't take place until most of files are installed on hard drive? I could well be wrong. tho .
PLease reply !

I think fruit bat means to copy the i386 folder from your windows XP disk from your external cd drive to the partition on your hdd which doesn't have windows on it while you have windows up and running.

Then format and install windows from one partition onto the other.

You cannot install ontop of it , it will install to another folder on C: i.e. windows000.

To to a repair instal (replace corrupt files) or a clean install (wipe c: partitoin) you need to boot from the CD.
