How difficult is it to install a usb 2.0 / firewire card. My pc already has usb 1 but not it seems on a pci card. Can I just add on the new card?

Easy, just open it up, locate a spare PCI slot, slot in the USB or Firewire card, put it back together and switch on. The new card will be detected. There is no need to load any software.

All this assumes you are using XP with SP2. Also if you are putting in both types of card, do them one at a time.

Should have added, if you look in device manager after install the USB 2 will be listed as a Standard Enhanced device under USB, and the firewire should have its own entry as an IEEE1394 device.
