Installing old games/programs with Windows XP

  peterryan33 12:46 05 Mar 06

I am new to this forum and would appreciate any help/advice on the problem I have.

I have a pc with Windows XP installed on it. I am trying to load games on which are reasonably old and have minimum requirements of Windows 95/98/2000. I get the following message:

C:Windows\system32\autoexex.nt. System file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows application.

Is there anything I can change to make it work or will i just have to throw the games away?

I appreciate any comments.

program compatibility wizard?

Start, programs and then accessories.

Right click the exe file, choose properties and then compatibility tab.

As above, but try compatibility wizard first.Should mention that some very old programmes may not appear to want to work, but you can try to 'open' them, before you reject the idea.

click here and scroll down to XP_FIX.EXE to download a fix for the autoexec issue. You may still need to run the game in compatability mode.
