Installing new HDD on laptop

  Lippy 18:16 02 Sep 03

Hi All,
I think I need to buy a new HDD for my laptop. I have never done this before is there any advice anyone can give me. The machine I'm using is a Toshiba Satellite 1900 with a 2.5" Ultra 100 DMA 18gb hard drive. While I'm doing it I thought I'd upgrade to 40gb. I've used the prodiuct recovery CD from Toshiba to reinstall everything as per factory in the past, will that still work with a new hard drive? Can I buy the hard drive preformatted? or will I need to do that too? As you can see I am a novice so any help would be gratefully received.

It is unlikely that the hard drive will be preformatted. The supplier doesn't know how many or what sized partitions you want.
Your recovery cd should work with a new hard drive, only a few select companies use tattooing on the hard drive, but I think they stopped doing it in the end. There is probably a code embedded in the bios chip to verify your system against the restore cd.
