Installing linux downloaded apps

downloaded a video editor application but how the heck do I install it onto my Mandrake 9.2 distro.

Is there a general installation compilation routine or does each app have its own?

If the file with something like 'tar.gz' then its a zipped file. Make a folder up and extract the file to it. Have a look in the folder you extracted the file to and you should see a readme text file in there which will give you instructions on how to load the program.

Different programs load in different ways, depending on how they are packaged.

In many ways it is usually better to download a rpm file. This usually has all the installation steps included. You need to find the right rpm for Mandarake.
