Install a second hard drive using XP Pro

  Nades 18:48 28 Jan 05

I have been running XP Pro with for a long while without any problems. I have had 2 hard drives installed all this time, one drive has XP and all my other programes and the other drive i use for storing my files (it has no OS on it). I have just bought a new bigger second drive and swapped it in my pc. The new drive is recognised in the bios, device manager can see it and says it's installed and running ok but yet i can not see it in My Computer to use. Do i need to re-install XP or is there another solution.

Ensure the existing drives jumpers are set to master and the new drive to slave.

Just boot the machine and when Windows starts go

Right Click My Computer > Manage > Disk management.

You will see your new drive in the bottom pane as unallocated.

Right click on the small portion on the left hand end and choose initialise.

Then right click on the large section on the right and choose Add Partition.

Follow through the prompts and this will also allow you to format the drive.

Right click on My Computer/Manage/Disk management then right click in the right hand pane of your slave drive, choose Partition, selct the whole of the drive if you wish or partition to differnt sizes then click on format then quick format and it will now show in My Computer and be ready for use
