inserting sig. with autotext current issue

I was a bit miffed that I wasted several hrs trying to do this from the article in the mag. the result was a block of blue or pink hue, around the signature (depending on the whiteness of the scanned paper on which the sample signature is written. To correct this I opened the scan in photoshop and spent hrs. erasing the background, only to find that word could not insert a png file. changed it to a bmp with same result.
I suppose I would avoid the problem if I scanned the signature in mono, but I want it in brown, for which my scribblings are known.(to the extent that I cashed a cheque at a bank miles from home, and the only thing that convinced the teller that I, was me, was when asked by my home bank if the cheque was written in brown ink!!)
