Inserting moving images in Powerpoint 2003

The Microsoft Office site tells me HOW to do this, which is fine. But I can't find any info there about recommended specs.

What I want to know is what movie type is best to run in Powerpoint 2003? What resolution? What size movie file becomes too large to play?
Someone is creating a movie for a presentation I am working on and wants to know the answers to these questions. He is suggesting a .mov (Quicktime?) format. Will this work if the PC I am using for the presentation has QT movieplayer installed?

Can anyone help us?
Many thanks.
