Inserting French accents in Word

Having had to do a reinstallation of Windows XP after a hard drive failure I have the mammoth task of restoring all my various settings. I used to be able to insert French accents easily using ALT+ the numeric keyboard e.g. 0233 gave me é. Now this works fine in this message but nothing happens in Word. Using Insert, Symbol then finding the one I want and then Insert is long-winded. What settings do I need to change in Word to get my ALT+ numeric keyboard back? Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know about that but try the following in Word (works in Word 2000, dunno about later versions):

Press CTL and ' then release ' and press e to
get é

Press CTL and ' then release ' and press a to
get á

Press CTL and ` then release ` and press e to
get è

Press CTL and ` then release ` and press a to
get à

In Word you need the num lock on.

Problem solved, thanks very much. My Number Lock must have been already on previously without me realising it. With the re-installation it must have defaulted to the off position.
