Insecure wi fi hotspots

Last nights Watchdog TV shoe highlighted the ease that keyloggers etc can capture/ take control of laptops at wi fi hotspots. Maybe a good subject for PC Advisor (maybe already covered?). Is there a way to protect oneself from this?

As suggested on Watchdog last night one safe way is to use a VPN connection.

A VPN is a technical strategy for creating secure connections, or tunnels, over the internet.

So I take it, that they are just waiting there to take over My PC. You get loads of rubbish on TV and Newspapers. I have used McDonald's Free Hot Spot when on holiday doubt that anyone would be interested in my Laptop. Also you can pull the plug if it started acting odd. Main thing you need is a good AV thats kept up to date and Firewall if you want to go over the top
