Info Post Win XP boot lockup

A couple of weeks ago I had a boot problem on a 3 year old AMD 3000+ machine.Win Xp SP2 would lock up at the desktop screen. This would occur as the computer did a final check by lighting up the activity lights on the floppy drive and the 2 CD/DVD drives. It appeared to be worse at cold boots and the machine would boot OK when warm.

As this extra checking of the drives reminded me of a mini restart which did not affect the screen, coupled with the cold boot problem made me suspect the PSU (power supply unit). Once I replaced the PSU, the problem disappeared!

I had a problem with XP Home SP2 on boot up, it would not go any further that the splach screen.

I unplugged everything, except the power plug & monitor, rebooted and all was fine. It turned out that the NTL modem was at fault.
