What benefit/s would you gain from increasing the above on my PC from 512 to 1024 if any.

Cheers
Brian

what are you using the computer for?

  Ritchbee 00:08 21 Jun 04

AMD Athlon 2700

Running XP Home

Use is for games mainly

Well I have 256Mb on and 98se and a XP comp and cannot see the need, at least for me to increase it and I do photo editing. Both Comps work fast

I would say you are wasting your money

  hugh-265156 00:20 21 Jun 04

for the latest games i would say yes get another 512mb.

there are no games that will actually use 1gig of ram or actually need that much to run but if the likes of far cry is anything to go by they wont be long coming. see minimum specs click here

256mb will run it ok but there will be some swapping and slow down. it runs ok with 512mb for me but checking the max ram and page file usage its close to the knuckle.

you are also going to need a half decent graphics card to play it or anything similar to thier very best. i can run it on a 1.8 p4 gf ti4200 and 512 of ram but only on low settings at 1024x768.

Thanks Huggyg71,

Have a Radeon 9700 graphics card so should be ok

  hugh-265156 01:07 21 Jun 04

you will be fine for a good while yet with the 9700 card.

reduce the amount of unneeded services and background programs running and turn off all of the graphical niceties in xp to free lots of ram that you can put to good use in games in the meantime. i saved around 60-70mb at start up just by doing this alone.

check out click here the 'safe' settings should be fine for most set ups 'gaming' also gives me no problems.

use start/run and type 'msconfig' and untick everything listed except av and firewall under the 'start up' tab to stop programs starting with windows automatically.they will still start when you want them by selecting the shortcuts etc.

set control panel/system/advanced/performance/settings/visual effects to 'adjust for best performance'

I'm going to add some more anyway as its a cheap upgrade.

  hugh-265156 01:10 21 Jun 04

ps. to look up start up programs in msconfig if your not sure what they are before unticking them click here to look them up.

you can always put the ticks back if you get problems.
