Inbox hit by 1000 emails with attachments. Virus?

Today my inbox has been hit by a huge number of e-mails - maybe up to 1000 - with subjects similar to: Returned mail, user unknown; Deliver Status Notification (Failure); Failure Notice etc. Some have attachments with file names containing the word Hentai, and other unsavoury words, or .dat files with various file tags like ATT001645 or similar. What the hell is this? I've occassionally had e-mails like this but not 1000 in a single day! I have McAfee viruscan and firewall, both up to date and functioning, and a scan of my system today was clean. My ISP is NTL.

what do they say is the origin? you may have someone who has your mail address on their pc and has become infected

Someone else has a virus and it is auto e-mailling to every one in the address book.

Do not open any just delete them.
