Just make and receive phone calls and not be larded up with other features that I will never use and which just add to the cost?

would see this as a viable product. Phone manufacturers and cellphone network operators are in a fiercely competitive business, and as phone ownership approaches saturation point the only way to stimulate growth is to keep coming up with new gizmos.

There's a very sizeable chunk of the market that wants all-singing, all-dancing phones, and they'll buy them, simply to be seen on the street with them. These people are often heavy network users,and to some extent see phones as fashion accessories, so there's a lot of development aimed at them.
