IE8 won't connect unless I do anything in LAN Set

I've just reinstalled Win 7 and IE8 on my laptop. However, it doesn't work (connection error page displayed) unless I tick and untick something (it doesn't matter what!) in the LAN Settings!? I have no proxys set and Firefox works no problem. Ticking anything and unticking absolutely anything within the LAN settings screen makes IE8 work until reboot.

Incidentally Windows Live Mail also refuses to connect until I have gone through this procedure in IE8. It is as if IE8 is seeing proxies that aren't actually there.

Bizarre.

Or Programs and make sure Internet Explorer is the default web browser.

Thanks. Will give these a go and see what happens.

Turned out it was Dell Quickset utility (which I need leaving on for work config). Fixed problem by telling it to mod the reg entry for auto detect setting when Quickset runs and this did the trick!
