IE8 Update settings

ACER T120 Desktop + XP Pro + SP3

Have just updated to IE8 from v6.
I was mid way in writing a long report & decided to put the kettle on. When I came back, the machine was doing a MS Update, then turned the machine off, to re-start.

Up till the update, my machine would check for - & install - updates when I was switching off for the night. This suited me better,,,,
I've looked into Auto Update scheduling, but only get a list of Times, not a choice on "When switching Off / On".

Any idea what I might previously had it set to ?
Or has that option been omitted from IE8 ?

If your computer is switched off how can it connect to the internet to download updates.

Only thing I can see is, Download updates for me but let me choose when to install them.It gives you a couple of choices in the Security Center. And at the bottom ,Automatic Updates.

I had altered the Auto bit yesterday to what you suggest - thanks.
I assume I have to wait till there is an update, for me to see if it does what I want.

thanks for your time,,,,,

I always download mine manually I prefer it that way.
I am sure someone will tell you the proper way on how to use it if different from the way you have now set it.
