IE8 and connecting to the Internet

When clicking on Internet explorer in start menu I get the egg-timer to show that PC is trying to connect, then egg-timer disappears and PC freezes for a while. Connecting using BT Broadband and wired to router. Using XP with SP3 and IE8. AVG Free Edition 2011.
Went back to a system restore point and could then connect to Internet and all ok. However, if I disconnect, same problem occurs and so go back to the same restore point and ok. Other PC's can connect to b'band wirelessly ok. Any ideas as to what might be wrong with my PC? Help appreciated as always.

Seems to be ok now. AVG was reporting errors but not now.
