IE6 number display - get a ? instead!

I run windows 2000 pro and IE6. With two web sites the first digit of some numbers is displayed as a question mark - ?. I contacted both companies - whsmith and coventry b soc - and both eventually said they didn't know but it might be problem with my browser.

It's a minor problem as only with these two sites so far, and only some numbers, but a nuisance as my account balances are not fully dispayed - the first digit is kind of important!

Oh, should say this is a fairly recent occurence - say last 3 months - o.k for years before and I've made no major changes - perhaps one of those automatic update thingys?

Any ideas please?
