IE6 locks up

I am using XP with BT broadband and my browsers lock up if I leave them pointed at a web page for a while and they will not download any web pages, whatever address I type in.
I can restore the function by re-starting my computer then all is OK.
I spoke to BT helpline who informed me that I had SASSER virus, but scans do not indicate its' presence.I downloaded the Microsoft fix, but still no answer.I have tied the kmowledge base and downloaded a patch, but still not working.
Anybody have any idea please?

I have spoken with BT and they believe it is some fault with my PC and not their service or one of the browsers.
