IE6 connects to VPN when website not found

I have a Broadband Cable Modem connection that works fine. I also have a VPN connection to my workplace. I use WinXP Pro and IE6. However, when surfing the web, if I attempt to view a page that doesn't exist or the address is wrong, IE6 opens my VPN connection and attempts to connect even though it has been using the Broadband connection fine until then.
How do I stop it using the VPN connection and just accepting the page is wrong?
