ie6 always tries proxy server

Using winXP on an evesham laptop, with ie6 and freeserve as isp, all ok dialling up to freeserve with the option dial if not connected to lan. Yet if I connect a lan that has a broadband router(linked to btinternet via adsl) connected and select internet explorer it tries to connect to proxy server and fails. The local network attached to the router is visable and other PCs connected to the same router work ok. I even tried loading btinternet dial up on the laptop but this dial up account still attempted to head for proxy server and failed. Where does this proxy server come from and how do I stop it happening except when and if it is needed to link to freeserve?
