IE 6 delays

I've recently noticed a sort of time delay with IE6 whenever I try to load a website via address bar - it just seems to lag for about 20 seconds then loads any webpages / links etc I've clicked on, as if the (NTL broadband) network is only letting me access it every so often?!

I'm also getting the "detecting proxy settings" message in IE status bar at least 4 or 5 times a day, which is much more common than it used to be.

Also having the same problems with MSN messenger, seemingly "freezing" for a few mins at a time then going back to normal.

Any suggestions?!

(Have virus-scanned, defragged etc etc already to no avail)

how bad is your contention ratio? do you live next door to a young fella with a liking for huge downloads?

People who live around me aren't exactly heavy users, and there aren't many others around me with NTL broadband, never mind 600k!

So don't think it's that :-(
