I am trying to reinstall an OS and am having problems. I am pretty useless at this so all help would be good in a step by step fashion.
I have been in the bios and it tells me

IDE PRIMARY NONE
IDE SECONDARY NONE

is this the problem and if so what should they be set at?

The BIOS is not detecting the Hard Disk drive. Check the connections. Is this a tower or a laptop?

  eysha 13:21 14 Feb 09

Tower. all connectiosn seem tightly in place but what connections do you mean.
will be online waiting for reply. Thanks

Ribbon Cable to the IDE Hard Disk from the motherboard. Power cable to the HDD. Can you post back the make and model of the Tower.

you have not got the jumpers right on the hard drive by sounds of it, if two on one cable set one as master other as slave, always set CD or DVD as slave if its on same cable

don't know make and model as it was buit by hand.
I have the4 ribbon and power cable red to red, what do i need to do now?

  eysha 13:31 14 Feb 09

I think that the cd, dvd and hard drive are all on the same cable.
so the HD sould be master then one of the others slave - is htat right?
does the HD tell me where to change jumpers too?

It seems as you are not confident about opening the computer, and accessing the hardware.

I would suggest you ask a friend, who is computer knowledgeable and ask their advice.

i have the computer open and ready to sort this problem out and there is no one near by to help anyway so i have to do it alone - with the help of this group.

I doubt if you can set jumpers with the drives in place so you will need to remove them.

Have a read here click here

Removing the drives will also allow you to read the label showing type of drive number of heads cylinders etc. make a note of ththis the jumper label is also easy to see with the drive removed.
