IDE Cables

I am considering adding another hard disc to my 4 year old PC, all the hard discs I have looked at make reference to an 80 wire connection cable, my existing cables are 40 pin, does this mean I will be unable to add a further hard drive?.

Buy an 80 pin cable for a couple of quid and swap it for the 40 pin one.

Does that mean the 80 pin connector will fit onto a 40 pin device and still work OK? (more than 1 device on each cable).

80 wire does not mean 80 pin. 40+ of the wires in and 80 wire cable are for shielding purposes. The connectors are 40 pin in both cases.

That does not mean that 40 wire is interchangeable with 80 wire. The are some cuts in the cables which make them identifiable to the machine.

They are 80 wire, but still have 40 pins. All of your drives will still fit.
