Icons taking ages to be 'normal' after booting up

In the past, whenever I booted my machine up, the icons appeared speedily with their correct program association picture. But just recently, the icons remain 'un-associated' (no picture) for up to minute, gradually one by one getting back to normal. Its the same sort of phenomenon when you maybe re-boot after a windows update, or finished playing a graphically intensive game. But now it does it every boot up. Whats wrong?

os? it seems to me that your pc is busy doing a lot of things, i would run msconfig and try selective start up see what culprits might be there also spy/adaware might be a culprit.
