Icons disappearing

The icons on the toolbar at the bottom right corner of my laptop sometimes don't appear when i switch on my laptop, if i right click on the windows icon in the left corner choose properties, notification area, and under system icons some of the four boxes are ticked, but any that are not ticked it wont let you tick them, why does this keep happening and how can i fix this,

I guess you are using the Classic Menu style in Start>Properties, change to normal style then under Taskbar tab in Notification Area untick Hide inactive icons.

Don't forget to click on Apply after making the changes.

I am not using the Classic menu style. in start properties under start menu three items are marked, start menu, store and display recently opened files, store and display a list of recently opened programmes.
under notification area four items are marked, hide inactive icons, clock, volume, network, i want to mark the power box but it wont let me. how can i fix this?
