Icon on task bar in xp

I maybe being very thick but i cannot figure out how to add icons to my task bar in XP. I previously used win98 and just dragged an icon onto the task bar and it worked fine as a short cut for say, the calculator.
Now I'm using XP I cant do that.
Please help it's really annoying me

you should be able to do as before.

try a right-click on your taskbar, and check it isnt 'locked'.

right click the task bar select "properties/start menu/taskbar/customize"

select "always show" for any items you want listed.

or try "properties/ show quick launch" and then drag from the all programs menu to here.

is the quicklaunch toolbar active? Right click on the taskbar>toolbars>Quicklaunch, then just drag the shortcuts you want from the desktop.

after trying it, 'locking' the taskbar makes no difference, so ignore my comments :o(
