iBook or PC?

I have been using apples for about 15, but need to buy a laptop and am thinking of changing to a PC.
i have just under £1000 to spend and want a laptop for word processing, playing silly games on the internet and connecting to the internet via broadband. And I know this is shallow, but I'd like it to look quite cool too.
i don't know where to start with PCs, so could someone point me in the right direction.
I'm quite computer literate and am a journalist so would be using the word processing quite a lot.
Thanks very much,
Angela
