Ive 4 questions

1. Is it true that the majority of PC's today incorporate a hardware health monitoring chip on their motherboard? (Winibond IT8712F etc)

2. Ive read that a thermal diode resides on the processor die. Does the heath monitoring chip access this temperture reading?

3. Other accessible tempertures include the HDD temperture as well as an external ambient temperture reading. Are these accessed by the health monitoring chip from external sensors on the motherboard in a similiar way?

4. Ivve read the sensors are used primarily as a fail-safe to disable the processor in case it exceeds a certain temperature. Is there any other reasons for them?

PC Health monitoring has been around for some time and usually the Bios or third party monitor utility can be set to shutdown a system if there is a danger of overheating, particularly with regard to the CPU.

My last motherboard, a Gigabyte Socket 370 from around four or five years ago, had a Bios that had the ability to display the case's internal temperature according to whether the side was on or off.

1. - Yes - most (prolly all new ones) motherboards do have a sensor chip.

2. - Most and prolly all current processors have thermal diodes on die - or at least incorporated in the package. Some motherboards also have thermal sensors close to or directly underneath the processor. Sensor chips usually interrogate these external sensors, but newer versions can monitor the thermal diodes in the chip.

3. - Hard drives have their own sensors built in - accessed directly from the drive by suitable software - not from the motherboard sensor chip.

4.- Some processors will slow down before they shut down, in order to protect the processor. Seonsors which can be interrogated can also be used to speed up cooling fans. Newer boards have 4-wire CPU fans, the fourth wire being for speed control.
