Hyperlink problem

This is a problem I've got on a
machine and it's one I've never come across before.
When surfing, pages load as normal, but when he clicks on a hyperlink - nothing, nada, zilch! The browser sits with the egg-timer looking as if it's trying to load, but nothing happens - it doesn't even time out.
It happens with both IE and FF, so it's not browser-specific. The same problem appears on broadband and dial-up links, both on his own line and others, so it's not a line fault.
I'm stuck! Any suggestions?

This is a friend's problem
