The one thing you must not do is try to rectify the problem for yourself. You can oinly continue to do as you have as anything wlse would invalidate your warranty. As a final reaction, you can always return the lot as unreliable and get your money back or replacement.
BTW is there a good reason for choosing laptops rather than desktops. The latter are cheaper, easier to maintain and less likely to 'walk', especially in an academic environment.
