HP8665c ram support

I have a HP8665c PC with a pentium III 600Mhz processer, 2 sdram slots where I have 2 128M sticks. I would like to upgrade to a higher value stick such as a 256M but my user guide says that the slots will only accept 128M. I have heard that the higher value sticks might work. Has anybody out there tried this upgrade despite what the specs say? What would happen if I tried?
