HP PSC1205 Vista and reduction in scan quality

I have a HP PSC1205 printer/scanner/copier and have been very satisfied with it on XP. With Vista, HP have not got a new driver for the front end scanner software (HP Director)and instead suggest using a work around. This uses another imaging software (eg PSP or Paint) to initiate the (built in Vista?) scanner software and not the old HP application. Unfortunately, when I try to get an output in higher quality, minimal compression, JPG, it seems to default to lower quality high compression. Thus a 5" x 8" colour scan at 300dpi comes out at about 500Kb as opposed to about 2Mb on the old setup. The quality difference is evident under examination, and I can only guess this due to compression diffs. I have tried saving as uncompressed GIF and then converting to JPG but the result is still poor. Many thanks, Dave H
