HP printer ink problem

I have an HP deskjet F2180 printer and I'm using non-HP ink cartridges i.e. compatibles. The printer only produces a decent print on 'Presentation' quality. The 'Everday' printing is faint and patchy. Is this liely to be a printer problem or ink cartridge problem? The printer is only used rarely (once a week maybe).

could be that the cartridge is partly drying out. You could try the maintenance prog to clean the heads or my supplyer says to place the cartridge in approx a quarter inch of warm water for 5 minutes. Then dry it and try again. I have done this on a few occasions with great success.

This worked fine - thanks.
