Hp Photosmart 1215 slows down processing

I have an HP Photosmart 1215 printer connected via USB. There are no problems with printing, but even when I'm not printing if the USB connection is there it slows down all my other applications. I know the printer and PC regularly communicate but surely it shouldn't affect everything else? The only thing I can do is disconnect the cable while I work and reconnect when I want to print. I can't find anything on the HP site to help me - as far as I can tell I have the latest drivers - has anyone else got any ideas? An Epson Photo 810 works fine.
